The National Science Foundation is devoting $47 million to a pilot four-year Ph.D. model, Higher Ed Dive reported, citing the agency. Universities will fund students’ first year, NSF will cover the rest, and private companies will match funding for at least one year of dissertation research through practical experience at company sites. The University-Industry Demonstration Partnership will spearhead the pilot, which NSF plans to fund over five years for more than 250 Ph.D. students.

Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said most STEM Ph.D. recipients now build careers beyond universities, while industry has had few opportunities to invest directly in doctoral training. NSF data cited in the report said 40.4% of research doctorate recipients with employment plans not involving postdoctoral study headed to industry or business in 2024.
