The Learning Guild published a 2026 article by Lydia Elliott, EdD, on cognitive bypass, defined as AI performing cognitive processes learners would otherwise need for meaningful learning and expertise development. Elliott distinguishes bypass from cognitive offloading and scaffolding, and identifies three markers: the offloaded task was the learning task, the learner cannot evaluate the output, and the bypass is invisible to the learner.
